Live Event Illustration London Book Launch Penguin70-imogen-partridge-illustration-and-design.jpeg

Why Hire a Live Illustrator for Your Corporate Event or Brand Activation

If you’re wondering whether to hire a live illustrator for your corporate event or brand activation, here's why a live event illustrator makes it memorable and what it says about your brand.

Why Hire a Live Illustrator for Your Corporate Event or Brand Activation

Have you ever seen an artist at work, wondering what they’re painting, peering over to try and get a better look. It’s actually mesmerising and really draws you in. Whether you like their style or not, it makes you stop, you want to see more, to know how it comes together and what it will look like when it’s finished. In the past I’ve had children (and adults actually) who need to be quite strongly coaxed to leave when they’re watching me illustrating.

This is what happens at live illustration events. People notice it and stop, they subtly move closer (I see it out of the corner of my eye), they nudge whoever's next to them and point. Or they come straight up to you with sheer delight, “Oh wow, are you painting them?!”, “This is so cool!” It creates a focal point, a conversation starter, something happening, a kind of performance. That's what a live event illustrator does that almost nothing else at an event can. It creates a moment of genuine curiosity and delight, but often in a subtle understated way, that invites and authentic joy.

But there's more to it than that. Choosing to have a live illustrator at your event says something about you, about what you value and the kind of experience you want your guests to have. It tells people you've thought about this carefully, you have curated something real and handmade, invested in a human and really valued their craft. In a world where lines are being blurred between what's real and what has been created by AI, this is a visible way to show how you value humanity and the unique experience of human expression and connection.

What is live illustration?

New to live illustration? It is essentially a person (like me, I’m Imogen, a watercolour illustrator based in Kent) illustrating live at an event - simple! So a live event illustrator creates original artwork in real time at your event, whether quick watercolour portraits of guests or atmospheric scenes capturing the mood of the space as it unfolds. If you'd like to find out more before reading on, I've written a full guide here: What Is Live Illustration? A Guide for Event Planners and Brands

What guests actually experience with a live illustrator at your event

The illustrations themselves become keepsakes. It goes way beyond a branded pen or a tote bag that ends up in a drawer (I know you can do better than that anyway), it is something personal, made in front of others, in that moment, just for them. People take photos, they video the process, they show other people, share them online, take them home, even frame and display them. All of that extends your relationship with that person and the impact you can have from just one initial interaction at that one event.

The process of watching it happen is part of the experience too, it’s a performance. There's something captivating about seeing a person or scene emerge from a few quick marks and a wash of colour. Guests who are drawn often come back later to watch others being illustrated, or bring someone else with them with an excited “Can she get one too?”. It gives people something to watch, something to talk about, and something to remember for a long time beyond the event itself.

Live portrait illustration is brilliant for social media

There's something about watching a live illustration coming together that people instinctively want to capture and share. Guests film and photograph both the process, and their finished portrait, and post it, often tagging the event or the brand in the process (bonus points for you if the paper is branded!). It's that organic, authentic content captured by the people experiencing it that's so different to what a photographer or videographer could achieve. For press days and influencer events in particular, having a live event illustrator in the room almost guarantees shareable moments that extend your brand reach well beyond the evening itself.

Who it works for

Live illustration works particularly well for corporate client entertainment, brand activations, press days, and private celebrations where you want your guests to feel really well looked after through thoughtful and personal activations.

It suits organisations that invest meaningfully in experience, law firms entertaining clients, brands launching something new and exciting, venues that want to offer something distinctive. It's not the right choice for every event, but there are so many that it can really enhance and leave people talking about afterwards.

Live illustration in practice

I've worked as a live event illustrator at a range of different events — from intimate brand launches to larger corporate gatherings. At the opening of Brasserie Angelica at The Newman in London, live illustration was woven into the brand from the very start, with guest portraits on the night and an illustration that now features on the A-board outside the restaurant and ties into the branding illustrations I did for them. It's a reminder that work created quickly and in the moment can have a life well beyond the event itself. Read the full story here

I've also worked at a number of larger corporate events under NDA, which perhaps tells you something about the kind of occasion where a live event illustrator naturally fits and has lasting impact.

The practical side

It’s pretty easy (which is great for your event planning). All materials are provided with a minimal setup, just a table, a chair and some good light where possible. Guests don't need to sit still or pose (unless they want to!). Portrait illustrations are ready to take home the same day and capture the scene atmospheric illustrations will be scanned and ready for you to use shortly after. It requires very little from you, but gives your guests a lot.

If you're wondering about any of the other specifics, things like how many portraits per hour, what setup I need, whether I can work outdoors, or how branding works — I've answered all of those in the FAQ section on my live illustration page here.

A note on watercolour illustration for live event illustration

There are lots of ways to illustrate live including digitally, marker pen, coloured pencil and mixed media. But watercolour brings something beautiful and light, a particular kind of warmth, looseness, a quality that looks handmade… because it is! Each illustration is different because each person is different.

You can read more about how it works on my live illustration page here or read more about the Brasserie Angelica story in my blog post here.
