Live illustration is exactly what it sounds like, artwork created live, in real time at an event, whether that’s a corporate celebration, hotel launch or cultural event.
However that often kind of presents more questions - who would hire a live illustrator, why would they want it for their event, what does it actually look like and what actually is the purpose of live illustration?
It is SO much more than just someone doing a drawing in the corner of the room.
Live illustration adds atmosphere, it creates connection and it invites guests to slow down and notice in a different way. It can become a keepsake, a storytelling device, or a powerful brand asset that lasts long after the event is over.
If you’re planning an event, whether it’s a corporate celebration, hotel launch, book launch, brand activation or cultural festival, here’s what live illustration can look like, and how to decide what’s right for you.
Different Types of Live Illustration
Live illustration is not one single format. There are probably loads of different formats, but there are some distinct approaches around at the moment and understanding the difference helps you choose what best fits your event. If you’re looking to hire a live illustrator in London or the UK, understanding these different approaches will help you decide what fits your brand and event best.
1. Live Portrait Illustration
This is one of the most popular formats for events.
Guests or customers are illustrated individually, in pairs or in small groups. The drawings are often completed in 5–10 minutes and given as a keepsake to take home.
Live portrait illustration works beautifully for:
Brand launches or activations
Staff parties
Corporate celebrations
Weddings
Book launches
Luxury hospitality events
People love seeing themself captured in different ways and having a memory from the event in a more unique format to photos (which have become something we snap away and rarely look at or appreciate). It’s really special to have an original artwork that can be kept or displayed.
The illustration process itself creates a buzz and an interactive feature of the event itself. People love coming to see what's going on and are often excited to see how quickly the artworks come together. I find there is a combination of people who say they can’t draw and are amazed by the creation of art at speed, or those who are creative and fascinated in someone else’s style and process (I’m the latter when I see live illustration at events).
I offer two different styles of live portrait illustration. Firstly monochrome line drawings are expressive live portrait illustrations that feel elegant, relaxed and characterful rather than hyper-detailed. These take 2-4 minutes per person.
The second is watercolor portraits, adding colour to bring the portraits to life. These take 5-10 minutes, or slightly longer the more people are included. I did one with eight people at a recent event, which is so much fun, but means only one person gets to take that home!!
The emphasis with live portrait illustrations is always on capturing personality and presence rather than photographic realism. As an artist who works in quite a lot of detail it is quite a contrast from a lot of my work, but the time limit pushes me to be less precious and the wonderful reactions from people are a real validation of creating something quick and personal in front of others that has that likeness to them is just what they need!
2. Scene Capture Illustration
Instead of drawing individual people, scene capture illustration focuses on the space or place as a whole. This is a really wonderful way to encapsulate the atmosphere and sense of feeling of an event. I love that the outcome illustration gives people a real sense of the event but invites some imaginative interpretation in a way that a photograph does not.
The illustration may focus on a whole space or a particular area. It might include groups of people or speakers on a stage. It might be a series of illustrations that capture different elements or parts of an event.
This style works particularly well for:
Cultural events
Conferences
Hotel or venue launches
Brand storytelling moments
Weddings
Literary festivals
Music festivals or events
It creates a wonderful visual memory of the event, something that can be used in marketing materials, social media or internal communications afterwards. It is also a great interactive element to any event, watching someone bringing it together as it’s happening is really exciting. The painting itself is a great opportunity for social media marketing, either live or afterwards, sharing both the process, the finished piece and the artistic storytelling.
This might be my favourite style, if I was pushed to choose. I really love detail and storytelling through illustration, but there is something about doing it with live illustration, capturing something temporary which is particularly special.
3. Graphic Recording
Before I tell you any more, if you are specifically looking for graphic recording for conferences or live visual note-taking, that is not currently a service I offer. I could probably do it, but at the moment I’m leaving it to the experts, of which there are many (feel free to get in touch and I can send some recommendations if you need any).
Now that’s out of the way, I’ll tell you a bit more.
Graphic recording is kind of like making notes but with pictures. So it’s often used at meetings and conferences to support the event and make it more accessible to people who learn in different ways (the visual learners like me). It can be created with traditional pen and paper, with the final piece being scanned for future use, but is more commonly illustrated digitally. It can be projected during the event, so the audience can watch it come to life, or can be revealed later as a fun surprise and for use after the event.
4. Architectural & Branded Environment Illustration
Some live illustration projects extend beyond the event itself.
This can include:
Illustrations of buildings or venues
Custom maps of local areas
Branded visual assets for websites
Story-led drawings that form part of a brand identity
Sometimes this work is created live during a launch event and then becomes part of the brand’s long-term visual storytelling.
For hospitality brands and venues in particular, illustration can help guests emotionally connect with a place, not just understand it.
Why Hire a Live Illustrator for your Event?
Live illustration brings a different energy to an event. It’s kind of been around forever in different forms, before photography this is how life was just captured! However more recently it’s becoming popular again and I think there is a real urge for different ways to engage guests and audiences, a need for in person connection and for traditional hand crafted artwork.
Live illustration encourages guests to pause and engage, it gives them a meaningful keepsake and adds a thoughtful, human element to an event. It also generates really shareable content, enhances brand storytelling and makes people feel seen and valued.
In a world saturated with digital content, there is something powerful about watching something made by hand, in front of your eyes.
I work as a live illustrator across London and the UK, creating live portraits and scene capture illustration for corporate events, hospitality launches and cultural festivals.
How Live Illustration Supports Brand Storytelling
For brands and organisations, live illustration is not just entertainment (although it can be that too). It can become a visual extension of your identity, a cohesive storytelling thread across event and marketing and great content for social media and press. It is also a really memorable way for guests to connect with your values and paying a real human to create meaningful art says a great deal in an increasingly digital world.
When the illustration style aligns with your wider brand aesthetic, it creates a seamless experience, from launch event to website to printed materials.
Is Live Illustration Right for Your Corporate or Brand Event?
Live illustration works best when you want a calm but engaging focal point or addition and to provide a really memorable guest experience. If you are trying to create thoughtful brand storytelling and something that feels really personal and human.
